Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg

Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg (OVGU) was created in 1993 as a result of the merger of three Magdeburg institutes of higher education, and is one of Germany’s newest universities. In the 20 years of its existence it has established itself as an ambitious, modern and dynamic university with a distinctive profile.

The high quality of teaching and research as well as the attractive environment make the campus at the heart of the state capital an appealing place to study in central Germany. The lecture theatres, laboratories, university library, refectory and student accommodation are within a few steps of each other, and the theatre, cinema, shopping district and railway station are all in the immediate vicinity. The university choir, big band, student theatre group, campus TV, university radio and student cabaret make for a vibrant life on campus. The sports centre offers over 60 different types of sport – from aerobics and dressage to triathlon and yoga.

With almost 14,000 students, OVGU is the centre of innovative research and teaching in the region. OVGU’s main emphasis is on the engineering and natural sciences, plus medicine. However its programmes in economics and management and the social sciences and humanities are equally well recognized around the world. Courses, some of which are unique in Germany, such as Biosystems Technology, Safety and Hazard Defence, Computational Visualistics and Cultural Engineering, attract students from all over the globe, with half of all students coming from a different German state and one in ten students coming from abroad.
